Ofada Rice
Description
Often called a Nigerian “superfood,” Ofada rice is an unpolished, indigenous grain primarily grown in Southwest Nigeria. Unlike the smooth, white rice commonly imported, Ofada is prized for its “wild” appearance, earthy aroma, and immense health benefits.
1. Origins & History
-
The Name: It is named after Ofada, a small community in Ogun State where its cultivation was popularized.
-
Ancestry: It is often a blend of Oryza glaberrima (African rice) and Oryza sativa (Asian rice). Because it is an “upland” rice, it grows in free-draining soil rather than flooded paddies.
-
Legacy: Traditionally, it was considered a “status symbol” and served primarily at weddings and festive events. Today, it has become a gourmet staple in high-end Nigerian restaurants and a favorite for health-conscious eaters.
